Storing furniture: sofas, mattresses and wood that come back as they went in
Clean it, cover it with something that breathes, never wrap wood in plastic, and keep mattresses flat or on their sides.
Furniture is the most valuable thing most people put in storage, and the easiest to look after with a little preparation.
Clean first
Vacuum sofas and chairs and let anything you have washed dry completely. Crumbs and damp are what cause trouble in storage, not the unit.
Cover it with something that breathes
Cotton dust sheets are ideal for sofas, chairs and tables. Plastic is fine for a mattress in a bag for a few months, but wood wrapped tightly in plastic can sweat, so use blankets or sheets on anything wooden.
Take it apart
Bed frames, tables and wardrobes store better flat. Put the screws and fittings in a labelled bag and tape it to the largest part. A few small boxes for legs, handles and shelf pins save a lot of hunting later.
Mattresses flat or on their side
A mattress stored on its side along the unit wall keeps its shape. Do not fold it, and do not stack heavy boxes on it.
Leave a gap
Stand furniture a hand’s width from the unit walls and put a pallet or board under upholstered pieces. Our units are dry and ventilated; the gap simply lets air move.
