How many boxes do you need to pack a house?
A room-by-room count from reception, where we sell boxes every day. Most three-bed houses need between 50 and 70.
The most common question at reception, after “which size do I need”, is how many boxes to buy. Here is the count we give people, room by room, for medium boxes about 45 centimetres a side.
Room by room
- Kitchen: 10 to 12, plus 6 small boxes for glass and china.
- Living room: 6 to 8, more if you have a lot of books.
- Each bedroom: 5 to 8. Clothes on hangers go in wardrobe boxes, three or four to a double wardrobe.
- Bathroom: 2.
- Loft and garage: anything from 5 to 20. Look before you guess.
Totals
A one-bed flat usually takes 20 to 30 boxes. A two-bed takes 35 to 45, and a three-bed house 50 to 70. Buy the lower number and come back: unused flat-packed boxes can be returned to reception within 30 days.
Books go in small boxes
Books are heavier than they look. A medium box of hardbacks weighs over 20 kilos. Use small boxes for books and paperwork and keep medium boxes for linen, toys and clothes.
Where the boxes go next
Once you know the count, put it into the estimator with the furniture. Boxes add up faster than sofas: sixty of them take as much space as three double beds.
